Schools in eight Selangor education districts are closed today, Friday 16 October, because of the haze. Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek announced the closures in a Facebook post at about 7pm on Thursday, and the Selangor State Education Department (JPNS) confirmed them in a statement. The ministry has also postponed the end-of-year assessments (UASA) scheduled for next week.

Which districts are closed

All schools under the district education offices (PPD) of Klang, Kuala Selangor, Kuala Langat, Hulu Langat, Gombak, Sepang, Petaling Perdana and Petaling Utama are closed.

Schools in Hulu Selangor and Sabak Bernam operate as usual, but all outdoor activities are prohibited. JPNS asked parents, guardians and students to follow its official channels for the latest updates.

Why Selangor this time

The closures come a day after the ministry went back to the National Haze Action Plan (PTJK), which closes schools when the Air Pollutant Index (API) reaches 200 and stops outdoor activities above 100. The details are in School closures in haze, KPM goes back to the API 200 rule, what applies now.

According to Bernama, Klang recorded Selangor's highest reading at 5pm on Thursday, at 195. Johan Setia logged 192, Shah Alam 180, Banting 174, Petaling Jaya 169 and Kuala Selangor 161. Nationwide, 34 areas recorded unhealthy readings and none recorded good air.

That same afternoon, the education departments of Selangor, Negeri Sembilan and Pahang and the Putrajaya department said institutions under them would operate as usual on Friday. Penang schools are open too.

UASA postponed

Free Malaysia Today reported that the ministry postponed next week's UASA, citing parents' and guardians' concerns for the health of pupils who would have had to attend school to sit the papers. Schools have the flexibility to reschedule, and the new dates will be communicated to parents.

What you can do

  • Check the list of districts above and JPNS's Facebook page before sending your child out.
  • Where schools are open, parents worried about their child's health may keep them home if they tell the school, the state education departments said.
  • Watch your area's API on the Department of Environment's APIMS portal. Readings can change within a day.
  • Pupils and teachers are encouraged to wear face masks.

What's next

No reopening date has been given for the eight districts. JPNS asked the public to follow its official channels for updates, and parents will be told the new UASA dates.
