The name of a Malaysian state is about to appear on millions of Linux computers. The next version of the GNOME desktop environment, GNOME 52, uses the codename "Terengganu".

For those not familiar with Linux, GNOME is the desktop interface that shows your windows, menus and settings. Many popular Linux distributions use it by default, including Fedora and Ubuntu.

Why Terengganu

According to 9to5Linux, the codename comes from the venue of GNOME.Asia Summit 2026, GNOME's annual conference in Asia. The summit will be held at Terengganu Digital 1303, Kuala Terengganu, from 31 October to 2 November 2026.

The report says the conference will be a space for open-source collaboration and for discussing the features that will go into GNOME 52.

Release schedule

Development of GNOME 52 began after GNOME 51 "A Coruña" was released last month. According to the official schedule cited by 9to5Linux:

Stage Date
Alpha 9 January 2027
Beta 30 January 2027
Release candidate (RC) 27 February 2027
Final release 17 March 2027

Features that may arrive

9to5Linux stresses that it is still too early to be sure of GNOME 52's new features. Ideas the GNOME team is working on that might make it into this version include:

  • Editable Quick Settings
  • A redesigned calendar pop-up
  • A new full-screen Alt+Tab window switcher
  • GNOME Shell search with file previews and filters

For Malaysia's open-source community, the GNOME.Asia Summit in Kuala Terengganu at the end of this month is a rare chance to meet the project's contributors in person.
