Superpowers, a free collection of skills that changes how Claude Code and other coding agents plan and build software, released version 7.0 on 10 October (Malaysia time). The biggest change is a rebuilt brainstorming skill, the part that asks what you want before any code is written.

On 13 October, the project's GitHub repository had 298,281 stars, well ahead of Anthropic's own skills repository (180,768 on the same day). It is open source and has install steps for Claude Code and more than a dozen other coding agents, so a student or a two-person company can run the same workflow as a large team.

What Superpowers is

Superpowers is built by Jesse Vincent and his company, Prime Radiant, under the MIT licence. It is a set of 15 skills, each a folder with a SKILL.md file, plus start-up instructions that make the agent look for a relevant skill before each task.

According to the README, a typical run goes like this:

  • brainstorming works out what you want before anything is built
  • writing-plans breaks the approved work into small tasks with exact file paths and test steps
  • subagent-driven-development or executing-plans carries out the plan, with code review along the way
  • test-driven-development makes the agent write a failing test first
  • finishing-a-development-branch checks the tests and asks whether to merge, open a pull request or discard the work

In a blog post on 9 October, the project's first anniversary, Vincent wrote that Superpowers is the top third-party plugin for Claude Code, with more than 1.1 million installs. That figure is his own, and we could not check it independently.

What changed in 7.0

According to the release notes:

  • Brainstorming opens with one open question. Its first message offers to skip the questions, then asks about a real moment or a concrete picture of what you want. It plays its understanding back in a few hundred words and marks its guesses as guesses.
  • It sizes the job after it understands it. A quick task gets done straight away, a small change is agreed in chat, and a project gets a written design document.
  • A "builder check" replaces the spec reviewer. A fresh subagent reads the design as the person who will build it and lists what they would still need to ask.
  • It asks which technical choices you want to make yourself, such as platform, language and libraries. The notes say this came after a session designed an iOS app, never asked about the platform, and built a web app.
  • A native plugin for Antigravity, installed with agy plugin install https://github.com/obra/superpowers.

Fixes for Windows users

Several fixes in this release are for Windows:

  • The hook launcher now finds Git for Windows when it is installed for a single user, and skips WSL launchers that fail when no Linux distro is installed.
  • It now ignores bash and where files in the current folder. Before this, a repository could plant a bash.cmd or where.bat file and have it run when a session started.
  • Hook exit codes are now passed back correctly, so a failed hook no longer reports success.

The example in the systematic-debugging skill also no longer prints the secret it checks for into your logs.

How to install or update

In Claude Code, Superpowers is in Anthropic's official plugin marketplace:

/plugin install superpowers@claude-plugins-official

When we checked on 13 October, that marketplace entry still pointed to version 6.4.1. Vincent's own marketplace already lists 7.0.0:

/plugin marketplace add obra/superpowers-marketplace
/plugin install superpowers@superpowers-marketplace

The README also has install steps for Codex, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot CLI, Cursor, OpenCode and other agents.

Before you install

Like many skill packs, Superpowers includes hooks and scripts that run on your computer. Read the repository and its skills before installing, as you would with any other software.

The README also says the optional visual companion in the brainstorming skill loads the Prime Radiant logo from the project's website, and that request includes the Superpowers version number. You can turn this off by setting the SUPERPOWERS_DISABLE_TELEMETRY environment variable. Superpowers also respects Claude Code's DISABLE_TELEMETRY and CLAUDE_CODE_DISABLE_NONESSENTIAL_TRAFFIC settings.
