Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said the state government's plan to sign an agreement with Bersatu is not affected by the deregistration of Perikatan Nasional (PN), Free Malaysia Today (FMT) and Kosmo reported on Tuesday, 20 October 2026. He also said the position would be reviewed within a day or two.

What Amirudin said

Speaking to reporters in Shah Alam, Amirudin said he was not sure of PN's status and needed to check first. But he said the deregistration is PN's own problem. "That is an internal problem they must resolve themselves," he said, as quoted by Kosmo. "Because our plan is with Bersatu, not PN."

He said the agreement is expected to be signed after 25 or 26 October, subject to confirmation.

Background to the pact

As reported in Bersatu's 11 Selangor reps to sign CSA-style pact with state, Amirudin said on 8 October that Bersatu's 11 assemblymen would sign a pact resembling a confidence and supply agreement (CSA) with the state government before the state budget is tabled in November. FMT said the terms have not been disclosed.

The Selangor assembly has 56 seats: Pakatan Harapan (PH) 32, Bersatu 11, PAS 10, Barisan Nasional (BN) 2 and one independent. FMT noted that a deal with Bersatu would give Amirudin support from more than two-thirds of the assembly.

FMT also reported that the talks come as ties between PH and BN in Selangor grow more tense, and as PN is strained by PAS having become its dominant partner.

Why PN's status is in question

The Registrar of Societies (RoS) deregistered PN on 20 October after finding that PN's 12 October reply did not rebut the grounds for deregistration, as covered in RoS deregisters Perikatan Nasional, PN to appeal to home minister and court. Kosmo reported the decision was made under subsection 13(1)(c)(iv) of the Societies Act 1966. PN says it will challenge the decision and seek a stay.

Bersatu is the party that complained to the RoS, and in the Selangor deal it negotiates as a party in its own right. That is why Amirudin stressed the agreement is not with PN.

What happens next

  • Amirudin is expected to settle the position within a day or two.
  • The agreement is expected to be signed after 25 or 26 October, if confirmed.
  • The High Court is due to hear PN's application to stay the suspension of its activities on 22 October, as covered in PN gets leave to challenge RoS suspension, activities stay frozen.

As of the reports, the agreement has not been signed and its further terms have not been announced.
