OpenAI used its DevDay 2026 event on 29 September to make a long list of changes to Codex, its coding agent, which many people use to vibe code apps from ChatGPT or the terminal. Some of the new features are on all ChatGPT plans. Others need a paid plan, and the top new tier, Pro 500, costs US$500 a month (about RM2,040).

There is a local angle too. Budget 2027 adds ChatGPT to the government's free AI subscriptions for young Malaysians, although the terms, including which plan they will get, have not been announced. What we know so far is in Free AI subscriptions 2027 including ChatGPT, who qualifies and how to apply.

On every plan

  • A refreshed Codex CLI. You can now start and steer tasks by voice. A new /agents view lets you hand work to several agents and track them at once. OpenAI also made it easier to edit prompts, resume sessions and use worktrees, and cleaned up the terminal layout for long sessions.
  • Code review in the ChatGPT desktop app. You can read summaries, look through code changes and ask Codex about possible problems before you comment on a GitHub pull request or GitLab merge request. With automatic reviews, Codex can take a first pass in the cloud while you are away.

Plus and above

  • Codex in the cloud. Codex can now run on your computer, remotely from your phone, or in the cloud from any device. Reusable development environments help tasks start faster and let a team share one setup with approved settings and permissions. This is on Plus, Pro, Business, Healthcare, Education and Enterprise.
  • GPT-6.1 Sol. OpenAI calls the new model "a major upgrade" to GPT-6 Sol, with strong results in agentic coding. It says the model comes close to GPT-6 Astra's intelligence at a fifth of Astra's token prices. It is available to API users and on Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu.
  • Sign in with ChatGPT. Plus and Pro users can now spend their plan's allowance in 16 partner tools, including Cognition's Devin, Notion, Vercel and T3, and set how much each tool may use.

Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu

  • Codex Security Cloud. It scans whole GitHub repositories on demand or on a schedule, and keeps checking new commits. Codex looks into each finding, removes duplicates and prepares fixes in the cloud, even when your laptop is closed.

The new Pro tiers

According to OpenAI's help centre, ChatGPT Pro now comes in three monthly plans:

Plan Price About Ultrafast
Pro 100 US$100 RM408 No
Pro 200 US$200 RM816 No
Pro 500 US$500 RM2,040 Yes

Ringgit figures are our conversion at about RM4.08 to the US dollar, the rate in early October.

Ultrafast is OpenAI's new speed tier. The company says it generates tokens up to eight times faster in Codex, at 300 tokens a second, and up to six times faster in the API. It is on Pro 500 and Enterprise. On Pro 500, Ultrafast draws on your included usage at eight times the standard rate, then on credits at six times the standard credit rate. OpenAI says Pro 500 has 25 times the usage allowance of ChatGPT Plus.

A date for Pro 200 subscribers

Pro 200 is open to new subscribers again, but new subscriptions come with a lower usage allowance than before. If you had an active Pro 200 subscription at any point from 22 September to 10am Pacific Time on 29 September 2026 (1am on 30 September in Malaysia), you keep the old allowance until 29 October 2026. After that, your plan moves to the lower allowance. The price stays at US$200 a month, and OpenAI says affected users will get an email.

Which plan for a beginner

The refreshed CLI and code review are on all plans, so you can try Codex without paying for Pro. Plus adds cloud tasks and GPT-6.1 Sol. The Pro tiers give more usage, and only Pro 500 has Ultrafast. OpenAI's help centre also says you can buy credits to keep using Codex after your plan's allowance runs out, depending on your plan and account.
